Transcript: "The Negroes" By James Baldwin (adapted from The New Yorker) The Negroes had been in Washington for four days. They had listened to an old black bishop read the draft of a treaty which was supposed to be passed in blood. It was a beautiful, complicated draft, and they were beginning to feel good about it. The Negroes were no longer the passive, brutal victims of the Negro Liberation Movement. They had started to be something—a group, perhaps, in a vast group. The Negroes were beginning to feel marvelous and sad. Their sadness was the sadness which never seems to go away. In the Negroes there is the sadness of the contemporary Negro. Negroes are lonely and they believe they will never be truly happy. They are afraid of the white world. They are not free. But they are hopeful, so hopeful. And they are happy, so happy. They will never forget. "Remember the Sorrow," a song which, until yesterday, was quite new, was taken up everywhere. It was heard on the streets, on street corners, in hotel lobbies. It was sung by the singers who make the most beautiful sounds. It was heard, but it was more than heard, it was felt. And this feeling was not selfish, it was not gratuitous. It came of the suffering of the Negro. But, today, because of the admiration and love of the white world, the Negroes began to feel happy. They have become the mouthpiece of the white world. And now, although they are happy, they are sad. And this sadness will not go away. The Negroes were always afraid of the white world. They were afraid that their white friends, their black friends, their white brothers,
